Privacy Policy
Effective as of 2026-10-12
This policy explains how Brainee: Second Brain (the "App"), made by Serhii Hryn ("we", "us"), handles your information. The short version: the App is offline-first. Everything you create stays on your device, and we have no account system. The App sends anonymous usage statistics and error reports, which never include your content, and we run no advertising or tracking.
Data you create
Your areas, projects, tasks, notes, events, files, photos, links and settings are stored only in the App's storage on your device. We do not receive, upload or have access to this content. Your device's own backup (iCloud or Google) may include it, according to your device settings.
Files you share out of the App (for example an itinerary PDF) go only where you send them.
Permissions
The App asks for access only when you use a feature that needs it:
- Photos and camera: to attach images you choose.
- Files: to import documents you pick.
- Notifications: for reminders you set. Reminders are scheduled on your device; we run no push server.
Anything accessed this way stays on your device.
When the App connects to the internet
The App works offline. It connects only for the features below. Each request reveals your IP address and basic technical details (such as app version and operating system) to the service that receives it.
- Purchases: subscriptions are processed by the App Store or Google Play, and managed through RevenueCat, which receives an anonymous app user ID and your purchase history. We never see your payment details.
- App updates: the App checks Expo for updates, and checks trybrainee.app for the latest version number.
- Cover photos: when you search for a project photo, your search words are sent to Unsplash, and chosen photos load from Unsplash.
- Link previews: when you save a link, the App opens that web page to read its title and preview image, so the website receives a normal request from your device.
These services handle data under their own privacy policies, linked above.
Usage statistics and error reports
To find bugs and see which features are used, the App sends anonymous usage data to PostHog, an analytics service that stores it on servers in the European Union (Frankfurt, Germany). It sends:
- Screens you open, by their type only (for example "Inbox" or "task details"), and when the App is opened, updated or closed.
- Error reports: the error message and where in the App's code it happened.
- Storage size: how many items you have (tasks, notes, projects, events, files) and how much space they take. Counts and sizes only, never what the items contain.
- Device details: device model, operating system, app version, language and time zone.
- A random install ID, created by the App, so reports from the same install can be grouped. It is not linked to your name, email or any other app.
- Approximate location (city and country), worked out from your IP address when the data arrives. The IP address itself is not stored.
It never sends the content of your areas, projects, tasks, notes, events, files, photos or links, nor their titles. We use this data only to improve the App. It is not used for advertising, not sold, and not combined with data from other companies.
What we do not do
- No account or sign-up is required.
- No collection of what you write: titles and content never leave your device.
- No advertising and no tracking across apps or websites.
- We do not sell or share your personal information.
Keeping and deleting your data
You control your data: delete items in the App, or uninstall the App to remove everything stored by it on that device. Because we hold no copy, we cannot recover deleted content. Purchase records are kept by the App Store or Google Play and RevenueCat; contact us if you would like RevenueCat's record of your purchases deleted. Usage statistics and error reports are kept in PostHog only as long as they help us improve the App. Uninstalling the App stops them, and you can ask us to delete those sent from your device.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the European Union or the CCPA in California), you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal information. Since your content never leaves your device, you can exercise these directly in the App. Our legal basis for usage statistics and error reports is our legitimate interest in keeping the App working and improving it. For anything else, contact us and we will respond within 30 days.
Children
The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Security
Your content is protected by your device's own security, including its passcode and encryption. Usage statistics and error reports are sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
Changes
If the App changes how it handles data (for example, if optional accounts or sync are added), we will update this page and its effective date before the change takes effect.
